Sweet Soul Music
"Sweet Soul Music" went to #2 on the pop charts in 1967. Written by Arthur Conley and Otis Redding, it is based on the melody from the Sam Cooks song "Yeah Man". Here is Conley's performance of the song.

The Legend of Sam Cooke
Today would have been Sam Cooke's 83rd birthday. Here is a six part playlists with a documentary, "The Legend of Sam Cooke". The film has a lot of great video of Cooke and other from the 50's and 60's, as well as more recent commentary from people who knew him.
Additionally, the second video has a great segment about The Staple Singers.

Organic Moonshine Roots Music
I am having trouble deciding which songs off of Valerie June's first album, Pushin' Against a Stone, I should post. Here are two off the album, and a Sam Cooke cover. I am not sure if I can compare her singing to anyone else, but she self labels what she creates as "Organic Moonshine Roots Music".
"Workin' Woman Blues"—I consider this song the grown up version of Hazel Dickens' "Workin' Girl Blues".
"Somebody To Love"
"Bring It On Home to Me"

Percy Sledge
I found this first video looking for Sam Cooke covers, but decided that instead of including it in the last post, Percy Sledge should get his own post.

Sam Cooke
One of the greatest male voices of all time, Sam Cooke. Not that much live video of him, so only one live performance, but just the vocals are enough for the rest. Cooke wrote both of the first two songs.
"You Send Me"
"A Change Is Gonna Come" - This song was written and recorded by Cooke, but not released until after his death in 1964.
"Come and Go' - Prior to his solo R&B act, Cooke was in the gospel group "The Soul Stirrers". I don't think Cooke wrote this song, but he is listed as the arranger.
