Strangers In the Night

The #1 song fifty years ago was Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night". I cannot find any live video of it that looks like it from that time period, so here is the recording with images of Sinatra and Ava Gardner.

Ralph Stanley's Little Maggie

Here is Ralph Stanley's version of "Little Maggie".

Little Maggie

Here is Robert Plant performing "Little Maggie" at the Glastonbury Festival in 2014. This song was recorded almost 70 years ago by the Stanley Brothers, Carter and Ralph.  Their version did sound a little different.

Better Love

I was unaware that we were in need of yet another Tarzan movie, but given that we evidently are, at least we get "Better Love"—a new Hozier single—from it.

Humble and Kind

The #1 song on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart this week is "Humble and Kind" performed by Tim McGraw. This is the first #1 Country Song in four years written by a single songwriter as opposed to a songwriting committee. It seems appropriate to recognize this songwriting achievement, so here is Lori McKenna performing her song "Humble and Kind".

A Place of Rest

One of the very first posts I did on this blog, almost seven years ago, was a tribute to gospel singer Mildred Howard. Here is a 1969 performance of Howard singing lead with the Gospel Harmonettes on "A Place of Rest".

Stephen Foster Covers

Stephen Foster—this country's first first great pop song writer—died over 150 years ago, but his songs still get covered almost more than anyone else. Here are two recent examples:

  • Sammy Miller and The Congregation performing "Gentle Lena Clare"

  • Emmylou Harris and Joan Baez performing  "Hard Times Come Again No More"

At Last

I know that "At Last" belongs to Etta James, but Phoebe Snow's version kicks ass too.
