Iris Dement - Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

For this week's gospel song here is Iris Dement's version of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms". This song is played as the soundtrack for the final scene of the current film True Grit. In fact the melody of this song played on piano is included throughout the of the film. I am not sure if it is Dement's piano playing that is feature, but it sounds a lot like her.

The images in this video are totally unrelated to the film.

Iris Dement

It has been several weeks since I posted anything on this blog. I am going to try to start back up again, beginning with some videos from Iris Dement. I have include Iris in the John Prine - Duets post, and Emmylou Harris - Trios post. But this is mostly Iris Dement solos.

"Whole Lot of Heaven" - I don't think this song has been released on any of her albums.

Here Iris sings a Steve Goodman song, "He's Not You". This also gives me an opportunity to mention that earlier this week Obama sign a law renaming a Post Office in Chicago after Goodman.

In this video Jacqui Abbott sing Iris' song "You've Done Nothing Wrong".

Here is a video from the closing of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival a couple years ago. Iris singing "Old Fashion Love".

"In Spite of Ourselves" with Iris Dement

"Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" with Nanci Griffith

Emmylou Harris - How She Could Sing the WIldwood Flower

This post is about one of the songs on Harris' latest album All I Intended To Be. Here is an interview where she discusses the song, "How She Could Sing the Wildwood Flower".

Here Buddy Miller helps her sing the song she wrote with Kate and Anna McGarrigle

Here is the show about the Carter Family that inspired the song.

You can click out and see Harris and Iris DeMent singing the Carter Family song "Wildwood Flower".

Emmylou Harris - Trios

Emmylou Harris is one of the best harmony singers ever. In addition to recording two trio albums with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, she has recorded and performed with numerous other artists.

Here are three videos with three totally different trio combinations.

"Are You Tired of Me My Darling" is an old Carter Family song that Emmylou and Iris Dement recorded with Nanci Griffith for Nanci's Other Voices/Other Rooms album.

This is one of my favorite videos on all of YouTube. Emmylou, Mary Black and Dolores Keane performing "Sonny".

The last two videos where from back in the 1990's. Here is a video from a recent Three Girls and their Buddy concert. Emmylou, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin singing Patty's song "Mary".
