Leonard Cohen Covers

Today three of the best covers of Leonard Cohen Songs.

I know that Jeff Buckley had a big hit with this song, but I like this version of "Hallelujah" done by K.D. Lang.

Teddy Thompson performed this song in the film Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man. He is a live version of him singing "Tonight Will Be Fine".

Madeleine Peyroux record this on her album Careless Love. Here she is performing "Dance Me To The End Of Love".

Death

Flowers, the theme of my last post, was a little soft. I was going to counteract this with a post of murder ballads, but when I found the first video below, I decided to just do Death. I will do a post of murder ballads some other time.

This is Emmylou Harris performing my favorite Julie Miller song, "All My Tears". Julie and her husband, Buddy, both appear with Emmylou in this video.

You can't get more to the point than this. Ralph Stanley singing "O Death" a cappella.

And for a really sad one, Alison Krauss performing "Jacob's Dream".

Flowers

Variations on a theme. Also the three videos in this post come from three different Continents.

From Australia, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson doing their song "Wildflower".

From the USA, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion doing their song "When The Lilacs Are In Bloom".

And my favorite singer from Yorkshire, Kate Rusby doing "Blooming Heather".

Bob Dylan Covers

Today posts are all covers of Bob Dylan songs.

First, Pops Staples doing "You Gotta Serve Somebody".

Susan Tedeschi doing "Don't Think Twice".

I had a tough time deciding whose version of "All Along the Watchtower" to include, either Dave Matthews Band or JImi Hendrix. But I have decided to go with Jimi.

Mildred Howard Tribute

One of my favorite vocal groups of all time is Dorothy Love Coates and the Gospel Harmonettes. Mildred Howard, one of the founding members of the Gospel Harmonettes, died last month. This post is a tribute to her.

In this video Howard has a lead part. She is on the far left, and sings lead second.

Here is an early video of the group is doing "You Must Born Again".

There is a video of Howard, many years later, singing lead on the same sang as in the previous video. That video will not embed, so you have to follow this link to see it.

June Carter & Johnny Cash

Here is a two part video of a concert that was done while June Carter was recording her album Wildwood Flower, a recording of songs that had originally been recorded by her mother and the Carter Family. Johnny, June and some of their family appear in the video.

Also one of Sarah Vowell's best segments on This American Life, called
"The Greatest Love Story of the 20th Century", is about Johnny and June. It takes some work to get to the get to it. Click on the link above, then on the page that opens click on the Full Episode link. The Sarah Vowell segment starts at about 47 minutes. After the file downloads, you can drag the cursor over to 47 minutes to get to the beginning.

My first post is a couple of my favorite Adele video's.
