One Night With Janis Joplin
Mary Bridget Davies is currently performing as Janis Joplin in the show "One Night with Janis Joplin" at the Arena Stage. The show is headed to Broadway. I saw it last night, and it should be a big hit in New York. Sabrina Elayne Carten co-stars as several of the women who influenced Joplin's singing, Unfortunately I don't see any clips of her performing, so you will have to attend the show in order to see her. It is well worth it to see either of these two women perform, and a double treat to see them together.
Here are some clips from a few years back of Davies performing with Joplin's band, Big Brother and the Holding Company.
"Piece of My Heart"
"Summertime"
"Ball And Chain"—Big Momma Thorton wrote this song, and you can see her performance of it in this 2010 Post

Jerry Ragovoy
The songwriter Jerry Ragovoy passed away a couple days ago. In tribute, here are performances of a couple songs he wrote.
"Time Is On My Side" - Irma Thomas recorded this song in the early 1960's. You can see her performing the song in this post. The Rolling Stones saw her perform the song, copied her interpretation of the song, and it became one of their early hits.

"Get It While You Can" - This song was also recorded by Janis Joplin, but it was recorded first by this man, Howard Tate.

Janis Joplin
Today is the 40th anniversary of the death of Janis Joplin, who died on October 4, 1970 at the age of 27. So a post in tribute to her.
My last post was on Big Mama Thornton, who was a big influence on Joplin. One of Joplin's biggest successes was "Ball & Chain", a song Big Mama wrote, and was included in my last post.
Joplin had another hit with this song that Kris Kristofferson wrote, "Me and Bobby McGee"
Here Joplin performs George Gershwin's classic "Summertime"
Finally, "Mercedes Benz" a song Joplin co-wrote with the poet Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth
