Cowboy Yodel

I have to guess that Wanda Jackson is the only member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame who could ever yodel like this. I am almost mesmerized by this.

"Cowboy Yodel"

Now in her Seventies, Jackson is still yodeling away, as you can see in this video from 2009

I Will Aways Love You

This just seems like an appropriate post for Valentines Day,

Dolly Parton sings "I Will Always Love You" to Porter Wagoner in 2007, just a couple months before he died. Dolly wrote this about Wagoner in 1973 when she decided to leave his television show, and strike out on her own—a move that upset Wagoner a great deal. Eventually he forgave her, and this became one of the most successful songs of all time.

Somewhat presciently, I wrote this post on Friday night. I considered including a video of Whitney Houston's version at the time, but decided to just go with Dolly's version. Houston's recording of the song really made it the success that it has become, and given her death on Saturday I don't think I can post this without including one of her performances. So the second video is Houston's performance of the song.

Baltimore Fire

The Great Fire of Baltimore occurred 108 years ago this week, burning to the ground 1,526 buildings. To mark the occasion here is Charlie Poole's (1892-1931) recording of "Baltimore Fire".

Josh Graves

A couple performances by Josh Graves (1928-2006), the man credited with bringing the resonator guitar—otherwise known as the dobro— into bluegrass music. He was part of the Foggy Mountain Boys who performed with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.

A instrumental version of the gospel song "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior"

"Foggy Mountain Rock" performed with Earl Scruggs on banjo.

"Fireball" from 1987 with Jesse McReynolds solo on mandolin, Kenny Baker solo on fiddle and Eddie Adcock solo on banjo

Etta James/Amazing Grace

The late, great Etta James performing "Amazing Grace" accompanied by Dr. John and Allen Toussaint on piano. The video and audio are a bit out of synch, but the sound quality is good.
